Fabien Schwob

Senior Backend Engineer · Python / Django / PostgreSQL

Hey, I'm Fabien. I've spent the last twenty years designing, building and scaling web applications and the distributed systems behind them — most of it in Python and Django, a framework I've been using since its earliest years. I care about backends that stay fast, reliable and maintainable long after they ship.

Since 2016 I've been a software engineer at 89grad, in Bern, Switzerland — designing and maintaining backend systems with a focus on reliability, performance and long-term maintainability: API design, async task processing, cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, and a healthy obsession with code quality and architecture reviews.

Before that I spent eight years at Paperblog, where Django, PostgreSQL, Redis and friends served millions of pages — and where I learned that scaling is as much about the infrastructure you run as the code you write.

fit/ — athlete portfolios

A portfolio platform for athletes: showcase your activities, race results, personal records and sponsors, and share your athlete card with the world. Public profiles, a management dashboard, and sports-data integrations such as HYROX.

Under the hood, twenty years of Django distilled into a production-ready foundation: authentication, Tailwind styling, background jobs, Docker support, PostgreSQL and Redis configuration, observability, and deployment-oriented defaults.

weplay/ — game collections

A video-game collection manager and discovery platform. Browse platforms and games sourced from IGDB, build your library and wishlist, track ownership, play status, purchases, sales and item condition — and show it all off on a public profile.

feedproxy/ — feeds, tamed

A media-feed aggregation service that collects content from sources like Reddit and Tumblr, then stores and serves it through RSS feeds and a lightweight browsing interface — with optional Telegram alerts when new content lands.

Beyond the day job, I'm drawn to scalable digital products, developer experience, online communities and sports-related platforms. I write about programming and other things on the blog.
